It’s important that whenever you leave your home you are keeping it secure. Even if you are only going to be gone for a few minutes. So we’ve compiled this checklist for protecting your home when you leave it. 

Checklist:

• Lock all doors and windows
• Ensure all valuables are out of sight
• Keep your keys and valuables away from the letterbox so that burglars can’t hook them or retrieve them through the gap
• Leave a light on
• Use a timer device to turn lights or the radio on
• Make sure nothing is left outside in the garden e.g. ladders or a bike
• Ensure all garden gates are locked
• Set your security alarm

If you are going away for a long period of time you might also want to consider this additional checklist for protecting your home when you leave it for long periods of time:

Holiday Check List:

• Keeping any social media posts private so that criminals and burglars won’t know that your house is empty
• Get a neighbour or friend that you trust to keep an eye on the property and maybe even give them a key so they can turn lights on and close curtains etc
• Cancel any deliveries such as newspapers or milk so that burglars don’t see them piling up and know you aren’t at home
