Setting up a neighbourhood watch group for your street

What is a neighbourhood watch group?

It is a group run entirely by volunteers from your street or community and aims to keep the community safe.

Step 1. Get to know your neighbours

If you don’t know your neighbours then maybe now is a good time. After all, you can’t set up a neighbourhood watch group for your street if you don’t know your neighbours. Get their numbers and set up a group chat where you can all talk, share stories and ask for help. Or arrange a weekly meeting (socially distanced of course) in someone’s garden where you can bring any worries or information to the group.

Step 2. Lay down some rules

If people are worried about their privacy being invaded because of the watch group assure them that you are only doing this to protect the community and if they don’t wish to be a part of it that is okay. The information you share should only be related to suspicious behaviour, crime updates and safety tips, nothing personal.

Step 3. Keep your neighbours informed

Once you have a group chat or a meeting set up, use it to keep your neighbours informed of any local crime. For example, if you hear about a wave of shed break-ins you can let them know so they are more careful and on the lookout.

Step 4. Help your neighbour

If you see that a neighbour has left their car window open or left their bike unchained then message them. Maybe your neighbour is going on holiday and needs someone to keep an eye on their house or take their bins out then offer your assistance. A neighbourhood watch is all about the community helping each other.
